Can chiropractic care help with pregnancy-related issues?Yes, chiropractic care may help with your pregnancy related pain no matter what stage of your pregnancy you are at. Throughout the course of your pregnancy many changes are happening in your body, for example certain hormones are released throughout your pregnancy that encourage the relaxation of ligaments and soft tissues. This allows for your body to adapt and grow with the baby and ultimately to aid in birth. While this process is normal and useful, the changes can sometimes relate to various musculoskeletal pain including lower back and pelvic pain. This along with the physical changes of carrying extra weight from the baby/belly and other pregnancy related changes like altered sleeping positions can often lead to some aches and pains. Chiropractic treatment is safe throughout pregnancy and aims to treat and manage your musculoskeletal pain and aid in prepping your body for labour and beyond. We are able to modify treatments depending on how far along you are, including a belly pillow to allow you to lie on your tummy for treatment. If you have any questions about receiving treatment while pregnant, don't hesitate to ask your practitioner!

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture? No, they are different. While they both use the same needles, they are used in different ways with a different aim. Dry Needling: is rooted in Western medicine and neurophysiology. Dry needling involves inserting thin, solid needles into specific points within muscles called trigger points. These trigger points are tight knots or bands of muscle fibers that are tender and can cause pain and limited range of motion. The goal of dry needling is to release tension in the muscle and deactivate the trigger point, leading to pain relief and improved muscle function. During a trigger point dry needling session, the practitioner will locate the trigger points by palpating the muscles and insert the needle. The needle may be manipulated or stimulated to elicit a local twitch response, which is a brief contraction of the muscle fibers. This response helps to release the tension in the trigger point and promote muscle relaxation. Depending on the area of treatment, dry needling is generally a quick treatment ranging from 5-15 minutes. Acupuncture: is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It is based on the belief that the body has a vital energy which flows along pathways called meridians. During an acupuncture session, needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body. The needles are typically left in place for a short period, ranging from a few minutes to around 30 minutes and are thought to restore the flow of energy

Does dry needling hurt? The practice of dry needling itself is not described as painful, but can be a bit uncomfortable. Most of the time the sensation of a twitch response (contraction of muscle fibers) that is elicited during dry needling is quite foreign to people as they may not have experienced it before, which can be strange! What often follows, is a heavy achey feeling in the muscles that we have needled. Kind of like you have worked those muscles out really well and the soreness you get the day after a big workout. This discomfort may last up to 2 days but often will ease off after a good nights sleep. This feeling is totally normal.

What does dry needling do?Trigger point deactivation: Dry needling targets trigger points, which are tight bands of muscle fibers that can cause pain and restricted movement. By inserting a needle into these trigger points, it can help release tension, relax the muscle fibers, and deactivate the trigger point, providing pain relief. Improved blood flow: Inserting needles into the muscles can stimulate localised microcirculation and improve blood flow. This increased blood flow can enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the area, promoting healing and reducing pain. Release of endorphins: Dry needling may trigger the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals produced by the body. Endorphins can help reduce pain perception and create a sense of well-being and relaxation. Modulation of the nervous system: The insertion of needles into specific points may lead to the release of neurotransmitters that can modulate pain signals and promote pain relief. Neurophysiological effects: Dry needling can have neurophysiological effects on the muscles and surrounding tissues. It may help restore normal muscle tone, decrease muscle spasms, and improve muscle function, leading to reduced pain and improved movement.
